One-Day Sewing Workshops

Would you like to learn to sew but just don't know where to begin, then this workshop is for you?

If you are a total beginner or haven’t done any sewing for a while, this workshop is aimed to help you learn basic sewing skills or refresh your skills in sewing.

You will be shown how to use a sewing machine and basic sewing skills.  These will be put into practise where you will also make an item to take home with you.  Sewing machines are provided for you to work on. The sewing machine you will be using is the Janome 224A model, this is a good beginners machine with 18 stich types, pictured above. We will also supply the fabric and equipment you will need to work with.

The workshop will include:

·         Setting up the sewing machine and using its functions

·         How to wind the bobbin

·         Threading the machine

·         Learning which is the best thread to use in the machine

·         Using the different stitches on the machine

·         Understanding seam allowance

·         Sewing two pieces of fabric together with the straight stitch

·         Neatening a raw edge of a seam

·         Adjusting the tension

·         As well as making an of item to take  home with you

·         And more….

New to sewing and not confident of using your sewing machine, or just in need of a refresher, then this workshop is for you?

Wednesday: 3 December 2025

Time: 6.30pm-9.30pm

Cost: £25

In this beginner-friendly tutorial, we will walk you through what you need to know about your sewing machine! Learn how to thread it, adjust tension, choose and use some common stitches, and troubleshoot issues. This workshop will help you to get to know your machine and get ready to start making projects.

The workshop will include:

·         Setting up the sewing machine and using its functions

·         How to wind the bobbin

·         Threading the machine

·         Correct thread needed to be used on the machine

·         Learning how to use the different stitches

   ·         The needles to use

·         The use of presser feet

·         How to sew a seam

·         Tension issues

Workshop Details:

Venue: The workshops will consist of six students in the class at: Harborne Academy, Harborne Road, Birmingham B15 3JL. The room we have booked is French Class 2 at Harborne Academy. When you arrive at reception, ask the caretaker for the above classroom and they will direct you to us.

Time: Each class starts at 6.30pm prompt and finishes at 9.30pm.
